Fire Department

The Winterset Fire Department was established in 1872. Twenty-one volunteer firefighters, nine of which are Nationally Certified Firefighter II and seven that are Nationally Certified Firefighter I, provide fire protection for our community.

The Fire Department protects an area of 235 square miles including nine townships and the cities of Winterset, Bevington and Patterson, with a total population of 9,000 people. They respond to an average of 130 calls per year with three Pumper-Tankers, 1 Tanker, 1 Attack/Command Vehicle, and two Brush/Grass Trucks.

The rescue calls are handled by the Madison County Ambulance Service with the assistance of the Winterset Fire Department. They carry the Jaws-of-Life Rescue Equipment and Air Bags.
