Spring 2018

Baseball Clinic
Held in early March, after school at the hitting facility at the Elementary gym. 3rd-8th grade boys. Fee $15.00.  Includes an accuracy and speed contest on the last day. Instruction provided by the varsity baseball coaching staff. Registration ends February 15th, 2018.

Easter Egg Hunt in City Park (2018)
City Park North Shelter, Saturday, March 31, 2018 at 11:00 am. Boys and girls up to nine years old. The Easter Bunny will be present! Sponsored by Madison County Realty.

A Walk in the Park
Enjoy fresh air and natural beauty at City Park! Every mile walked/run by a sedentary person gives him/her an extra 21 minutes of life. For a longer distance and a little more rugged terrain, hike to Clark Tower (2 miles). Trail maps are available.

Celebrate Earth Day 2018
Sunday, April 22nd. Meet at City Park south shelter between 11:30 am and 12:30 pm for an interpretive walk to Clark Tower and back. Walk will begin at 12:30 pm. Please join others to enjoy the community of the woodlands. Park and Recreation and For Lands Sake would love to see you there. No fee, all ages welcome.

Adult Softball: Two leagues offered
1) Adult Coed (5 men and 5 women). Fee $250. Tuesday and Thursday evenings, May 8- July 21. Must be at least 18 and out of high school.
2) Coed Church (at least 3 women). Fee $125. Monday evenings May 7-June 11. Team members must be church members. All games are played at MM Fields Softball Complex. Anyone interested in forming a new team should contact the WPRD. Registration ends April 20.

Adult Tennis
Adult men and women, Fee $10. Beginning in April a men’s and women’s Tennis Drop-in League is planned. Courts will be reserved for a couple hours one day per week for each league. Also, with enough interest a “tennis ladder” league for singles or doubles could be scheduled. To register or to provide feedback contact WPRD at 462-3258 or email jpletchette@cwmu.net.

Intro to Pickleball
All ages, no fee. Learn rules, techniques and how to play the game of pickle ball. Pickleball is a game for all ages. Join us on Saturday, April 21st at 10:00 am at City Tennis Courts for a fun and instructional session, then stay and play a game or two. A few paddles and balls will be provided. Registration is required and ends April 16.

Pickleball
Adult men and women, fee $10. Beginning in May a men’s and women’s Pickleball drop-in league is planned. Courts will be reserved on Tuesday nights. Don’t have your own paddles/balls? Senior Pickleball
65+ men and women, fee $10. Beginning in May, a senior men’s and women’s Pickleball drop-in league is planned. Courts will be reserved on Tuesday mornings. Don’t have your own paddles/balls? Co-ed Adult Softball Tourney
Friday and Saturday, May 5 and 6. Pool play with seeded single elimination tourney to follow. Contact Brad and Becky Porter at 515-491-1167 for registration forms, rules and questions. Limited to fist 16 teams. Registration ends April 21. Fee: $120 per team.

Live Healthy Iowa Kids Track Championships
Friday, May 25th, 2018 at the high school track. Held in conjunction with the Winterset Middle School field day. Specific information and registration forms will be handed out at school. Top finishers of the meet advance to the State meet held June 10 in Marshalltown. No fee. Rain date is Tuesday, May 29.

John Wayne 5K Run/Walk
Saturday, May 26th, 9:00 am. Sponsored by the Winterset Rotary Club and Madison County Health Care System. Pre-registration is encouraged. Fee before May 1st: $25. After May 1st, $30. Youth Spring Tennis Fun
Boys and girls in grades 2, 3, 4. Fee $15. Tuesday and Thursday, 3:30 to 4:30, May 1, 3, 8 and 10 at City Tennis Courts. Basic skills are taught using fun drills and tennis games. Balls and rackets are provided. Registration ends April 20. Fee $15.

Introduction to Bocce Ball
All ages. Saturday, May 19, 10:00 am. Arbor Shelter in City Park. Have you heard of Bocce Ball? Did you know we have Bocce Ball Courts in our City Park? Join us and learn about this fun game. Learn the rules and strategies of playing Bocce Ball. Mayor Olson will provide instruction. Equipment provided. Registration is required and ends May 14.

Summer 2018

Mayor’s Bike Ride
Saturday, June 2nd, 2018. Check in at 8:00 am at the parking lot of the Winterset Aquatic Center. The ride will be to City Park and back. Purpose: to bring awareness for the need of a biking/jogging/walking trail. Co-sponsors: Winterset Police Department, Madison County Cycling Club and the WPRD. Kids wearing a helmet will receive a certificate for a free ice cream cone. No fee.

BRAT Rides
Bike Ride Around Town is for all ages on Friday evenings, June 1, July 6 and August 3. Join us for a bike ride before the Concert Series at City Park. We will leave City Park by 5:30 and ride the SHARROWS around Winterset. (Maps of the shared road way route will be provided.) Route is approximately 7 miles and you are welcome to ride it as many times as you would like. After your ride, head to the North Shelter for food and live music.

2018 “First Friday” Concert Series at City Park
Concert series is held at the North Shelter area on three Friday evenings, June 1, July 6, and August 3. Beginning at 6:00 pm, food and favorite beverage served. Live music from 7:00 to 10:00 pm. There is no admission charge for the concert series. No carry-in beverages or food allowed. Watch for further information. Sponsored by Madison Co. Chamber of Commerce and WPRD.

Youth Blastball
Wednesdays, June 6, 13, 20, and 27. Registration ends May 26. Girls and boys ages 3 & 4 (age determined on September 15, 2018). Beginning baseball/softball game. Held at Martin Marietta Fields – Softball Complex. Girls 9:00-9:45 am, boys 10:00-10:45 am. Fee $15.00.

Youth T-Ball
PRACTICE SESSIONS: Tuesdays and Thursdays, June 5, 7, 12, 14, 19 and 26. Girls & boys ages 5 & 6 (age determined on September 15, 2018). Youth develop beginning fundamentals of baseball /softball. Held at Martin-Marietta Softball Complex with two evening games held at Giffin Fields. Fee is $20 per child.  Age 5, 9:00 – 10:00 am, fee $20.00; age 6, 10:15 – 11:15 am, fee $20.00. GAME SESSIONS: Tuesday, June 21, 6:00 or 7:00 pm; Tuesday, June 27, 6:00 or 7:00 pm. Registration ends May 25.

Little Legends Golf Lessons
June 11th-15th at Lakeview Country Club. Boys and girls K-6th grade (17/18 school year). K-3rd from 9:00 to 10:00 am, 4th-6th from 10:00 to 11:00 am. Fee $50. Golf clubs, balls, instruction and other equipment is provided. Registration forms are available at the schools and the WPRD. Make checks payable to Little Legends Golf. Winterset Youth Golf Tourney
Friday, June 15th. Check in at 8:30 am, golf at 9:00. Fee $15. Held at Lakeview Country Club. Boys and girls, K-6th grade (17/18 school year). Event includes putting/chipping contest, hole prizes, adjusted golf format. Adult volunteers needed. Co-sponsored by WHS Golf Program, Winterset Optmist Club, Lakeview Country Club and the WPRD. Event included with Little Legends Golf Lessons. Registration ends June 4.

Movie Night in the Park
Friday, June 22, approximately 9:00 pm. North Shelter at City Park. All ages, no fee. Family fun with a movie in the park. Bring your own lawn chair or blanket. Movie sponsored by Madison County Realty. Register by Friday, June 8.

Bocce Ball Tournament
Saturday, June 23, 4:00 pm at the Arbor Shelter in Winterset City Park. Trophies to the winners. Dinner at 5:00 pm by the Cattlemen. All two person teams must be registered by 4:00 pm to be placed in a round-robin bracket. Fee $50 per team. All proceeds go to local non-profits. Sponsored by the Winterset Rotary Club. Wildlife Safari Park Family Campout
Saturday, June 23. Fee $40 per person. Looking for a WILD adventure? Join us for a Wildlife Safari Park campout at Lee G. Simmons Conservation Park & Wildlife Safari in Omaha, NE. During your stay, you’ll learn about native Nebraska animals, eat s’mores around the campfire and see the stars. The cost is $40 per camper and includes breakfast, admission to Wildlife Safari Park for the following day and a visit from an animal ambassador. Transportation not provided. A minimum of 15 campers is required. Registration ends June 1.

Winterset Senior Olympics
Men and women 65+, fee $10. Mondays June 4, 11, 18, 25 and July 2, 10:00 am. Have you ever wanted to compete in the Olympics? Well here is your chance Winterset style. Events to include pickleball, frisbee golf, balloon relays, track and field and nerf gun shooting challenge. Events will be held at the City Tennis Courts and open field area to the south of the tennis courts. Participants will earn points for attending each Monday plus points for placing in the events. Winners will be announced and awards handed out over coffee and doughnuts on Monday, July 2. Contact the park and rec office for schedule of events and locations. Registration ends May 25th.

Playground in the Park
For 3 to 8 year-old boys and girls, South Shelter at City Park. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, 10:00 to noon.

  • Playground I: June 25 – 28 Fee $30.00
  • Playground II: July 16 – 19 Fee $30.00
  • Playground III: August 6 – 10 Fee $30.00

Program includes crafts, stories, hikes, games, snacks and playground. One of the highlights is a group hike to Clark Tower on last day. Sack lunch needed on this day. Registration ends June 8.

Construction Kids
Boys and girls grades 1st – 6th. Saturday, June 30th, 9:00 am to Noon, fee $30. Held at a local woodworkers shop. Participants will create awesome projects to take home in this creative experience. There will be safety education about the use of many basic hand tools as well as hands-on learning. ***Parents welcome to stay and participate. Instruction provided by Rich Thompson and Larry Dillinger. Limited to 10 kids. Registration ends June 8.

Youth Tennis Lessons
Boys and girls, grades 3 – 8. Fee $15.00.

  • Session I – beginner, grades 3, 4, 5, 6. M-Th, July 9-12, 8:45 to 9:45 am.
  • Session II – advance beginner, grades 3, 4, 5, 6. M-Th, July 9-12, 10:00 to 11:00 am.
  • Session III – intermediate, grades 5, 6, 7, 8. M-Th July 16-19, 8:30 – 9:30 am.

Balls, racquets and instruction provided. Lessons held at city tennis courts. Pre-register at least 1 week in advance.

Winterset Tennis Rally
Friday, July 20. Boys and girls, grades 2 – 6. 10:00 am – 1:00 pm at City Tennis Courts, no fee. A fun-filled day of tennis match play, games and contests. Prizes awarded. Balls, racquets and supervision provided. All skill levels are welcome. Bring a sack lunch and your swim suit. Free swimming at the aquatic center following the rally. Call or email to register.

Junior Fire Academy
July 9, 10 & 11, 9:00 am to noon, Winterset Fires Station. Boys and girls, 3rd-5th grade (as of 2017-18 school year). Fee $20.00. Learn about fire safety, fire fighting techniques and about the firemen’s equipment. Registration ends June 29. Limited to 15 participants.

Yoga in the Park
Excellent for all ages groups, children to seniors. North shelter at City Park. Saturdays, June 2, 16, 30, July 7, 21, August 4. 9:30 to 10:30 am. Fee $2.00. Help build core strength and flexibility. Bring a mat or towel and water. No registration for the class is required. Fee paid to the instructor on site.

BRAMCO Bike Ride: Annual Bike Ride Around Madison County
Saturday, June 9th, 2018 at 9:00 am at City Park North Shelter. Fee $25.00 ($30 for late registration). See www.madisoncountycycleclub.org. for registration forms and further information. Tip: register early to receive discount on fee. On-site registration is accepted beginning at 8:00 am. Cyclists will choose either a 45 mile or 60 mile route, all paved. Sponsored by the Madison County Cycle Club.

Madison County Fair Horseshoes
Sunday, July 22. Fee $10. Register on site from 8:30 to 9:30 am. Pitching begins at 10:00 am. Madison County Fairgrounds. Sanctioned by Iowa Hawkeye Horseshoe Pitchers Association. Divisions are determined by ringer percentages. Persons who are not members of IHHPA will compete in an open division.

Junior Police Academy
July 31st, and August 1st and 2nd, from 10:00 am to Noon at the South Shelter in City Park (last day will be at Law Center). The Winterset Junior Police Academy is an opportunity for kids to learn about police training and related topics and is presented by officers of the Winterset Police Department. Cadets will experience activities including: physical agility training, fingerprinting, evidence collection, a K-9 demonstration, and more. Cadets will receive a Winterset Junior Police Academy T-shirt. Class size 16. Registration ends July 21.

Annual Cannonball Pump and Run
Saturday, August 4th, 2018 at Monumental Park (Cannonball Park), 201 W. Court Ave.  Fee $25. Check in from 6:30 to 7:00 am. Lifting starts at 7:00 am. 5K starts at 8:30 am. Fifteen age divisions offered with medals. Proceeds go to Winterset Rotary Scholarship fund and WHS Activity Fund. Youth Sports Camp
August 13th through the 16th. 10:00 am to Noon. Camp will be held at various parks in the city. Two different sports will be featured each day. Great way to get your little one active and to try different activities. Equipment and instruction will be provided for all activities. Registration ends July 27. Fee $30.

Youth Fall Tennis Fun
August 21, 23, 28 and 30, 3:30 to 4:30, at City Tennis Courts. 2nd-4th grade boys and girls, fee $15.00. Basic skills are taught using fun drills and tennis games. Balls and racquets are provided. Registration ends August 17.

Youth Flag Football
August 27th to mid October at Martin Marietta Fields – Softball Complex. 2nd-4th grade boys and girls (2018/19 school year), fee $20.00. Participants are divided into teams with adult volunteer coaches. If YOU are interested in coaching, contact the WPRD. Games held primarily Monday evenings, practices determined by coaches. Registration ends August 17.

Tai Chi for Arthritis & Falls Prevention
Men and women 60+. Fee 60+ free, $20 for under 60. Tuesday and Thursday, September 4 through December 6, 10:45 to 11:15 am. Madison County Meal site. Nationally recognized, evidence based falls prevention program that improves functional balance and physical performance. The program teaches balance skills and good body alignment by using coordinated, relaxed flowing movements. Tai Chi can help improve muscular strength, relieve pain and reduce stress. While the program is open to an interested individual age 18 and older, the course is designed for community-dwelling older adults aged 60+ who can walk easily with or without assistive devices. Wear comfortable clothing and sturdy shoes. Class is taught by a certified instructor, Stacey Falke.

Construction Kids Pro
Boys and girls grades 1st – 6th, Fee $30. Saturday, September 8, 9:00 am to Noon. Held at a local woodworkers shop. Participants will spend the class utilizing the skills learned during our Construction Kids class. Grades 1st – 6th. *Prior completion of Construction Kids is required. Instruction provided by Rich Thompson and Larry Dillinger. Limited to 10 kids. Registration ends August 24th.

Girls Instructional Volleyball
September 11 to Oct. 18, Tuesdays and Thursdays. 5th and 6th grade girls. Fee $20.00. Held at Elementary gym. Program teaches fundamentals and provides an opportunity to play organized games. Registration ends Sept. 7.

Junior High Introduction to Horseshoes
This program is a part of the 7th and 8th grade Physical Education curriculum. During P.E. classes in September, students learn about the game of horseshoes and have an opportunity to pitch several shoes. Instructions, horseshoes and court preparations are provided by the WPRD.

Covered Bridge Horseshoe Tournament
Saturday, October 13th at Madison County Fairgrounds. Check in from 8:30 to 9:30 am. Pitching begins at 10:00 am. Fee $10.00. Sanctioned by the Iowa Hawkeye Horseshoe Pitchers Assn. Divisions are determined by ringer percentages. Persons who are not members of IHHPA will compete in open division.

Women’s Volleyball League
September 5th to Nov. 7th. Wednesday evenings at the Junior High Gym. Women 18 and older (out of high school). A league fee $125, B league fee $100. Two divisions of play offered. New teams are always welcome. Registration ends August 24.

Annual Covered Bridge Race 4K & 8K Run/Walk
Saturday, October 13th at Winterset City Park. 8:45 am Children’s Race (fee $25/$30/$35), 9:00 am 4K/8K Run Walk ($15/$20/$35). Thirteen age divisions offered with medals. Halloween Trick or Treat Night
Tuesday, October 30 from 3:30 to 5:00 pm on the Winterset Square, 5:00 to 7:00 pm in the community. Keep in mind: dress children in bright clothing, carry a blinking flashlight or other noticeable device. Be careful with full facial masks so as not to block the line of sight. Parents assist little ones. Drivers, follow all traffic signs, drive slowly, and look out for little ghouls!

Walking
For all ages!! Don’t let the weather stop you from walking. Indoor walking is available at Hy-Vee and Shopko during their business hours as well as at the Junior High Gym from 5:00 to 6:00 pm.

Turkey Toss
Saturday, November 17th at the High School gym. 9:00 am to noon, no fee. Child and parent form a team to compete in a free throw shooting contest. Three age groups for boys and girls: 3rd-5th grade, 6th-8th grade, and high school. High score in each age group wins a free turkey.

Winter 2018/19

Adult Basketball Open Gym
Wednesdays, Nov. 7 – April 13, 2019, 6:45 – 9:00 pm. Adults 18 and older (out of high school). No fee. High School Gym. For more information, contact WPRD.

Little Husky Basketball Clinic
Held 6 Saturdays in December/January at the Middle School Gym. Boys and girls grades K-1st. Fee $20 (no ball), $25 (with ball). Focus on dribbling, passing and shooting. Instruction provided by high school coaching staff and players. Registration ends 11/19.

Notes from the North Pole
Register child by December 7 to receive a letter from Santa. Letters mailed directly to your child with Santa’s name and return address on the envelope. Unique idea for all your nieces, nephews or grandchildren. Register at the WPRD office or call 515-462-3258. All boys and girls, no fee.

Youth Basketball
December 1 thru January 26 at the Junior High and Elementary gyms. 2nd – 6th grade boys and girls. Fee $20. Designed to teach proper fundamentals, have fun with friends and play games. Volunteer coaches guide teams. If you are interested in coaching, contact the WPRD. Registration ends November 10.

Adult Co-Ed Volleyball Leagues
Wednesday evenings, Jan. 30 through April 7 at the Junior High Gym. Fee $125. Men and women 18 years and up, out of high school. Season begins in January with tourney finals played in April. Three men and three women make up a team. Captains meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, January 23, 2017. Registration ends January 11, 2018.

Father Daughter Sweetheart Dance
Friday, February 8th, 2019 at the Jackson Building from 6:30 to 9:00 pm. K-4th grade girls. Fee $30.00/couple, $10.00 per additional daughter. Fathers and daughters, grandfathers and granddaughters, uncles and nieces are all invited to join us for an evening of music, dancing and fun. A local photographer will be on hand to take your picture at an additional charge. Registration ends January 18, 2019. Space is limited to 150 young ladies. Register early!

Mother/Son Nerf War
Boys grades K-4th, Fee $20/couple, and $10 each additional son. Saturday, February 16th, 2019, 10:00 am to Noon at the Elementary School Gym. Battle it out with your lil’ rambo in this all-new nerfpocalypse!  This event will feature nerf wars, nerf games, crafts, prizes and an ice cream sundae bar. Bring your own nerf gun (bullet style) bullets provided. Registration ends February 1, 2019. Space limited to 50 young men.
