City Park

Winterset City Park has many wonderful features spread out over 76 acres: three beautiful limestone shelter houses; play equipment; restrooms; picnic areas; campground; sand volleyball court; hedge maze; lower park natural area, Cutler-Donahue Covered Bridge; Clark Tower; and other historical sites.

The City Park begins normal spring operation (water turned on, tower road open, shelter use) in April. The road to Clark Tower closes each night at sunset. The City Park drive-through gates (for vehicles) are closed for the winter months.

Winterset Aquatic Center

The aquatic center offers a variety of fun features for the whole family to enjoy such as slides, sprays, shade, grass area, zero-depth, and concessions. The aquatic center water is heated for added comfort. Aquatic programming includes opening swim times, lessons, exercise classes, private parties, and lots more.

Cedar Lake

North of Winterset (click for directions)

Cedar Lake is located a few miles north of the City of Winterset. The lake is managed by Winterset Municipal Utilities and is the drinking water supply for the residents of Winterset.  The Historic Jurgensen Bridge was relocated to this site in 2019. Boats are allowed, however boats are restricted to only use of electric motors. Picnic tables are located throughout the park, however we do ask that you please take your trash with you when you leave as this park does not have any garbage cans. Thanks for helping keep our parks clean!

Whistle Stop Park

Facilities include a basketball court, open shelter, play equipment, drinking fountain, and small open grass area.

Memory Lane Park

Carver Memorial Park

Dedicated in 1988, this small park is a tribute to the memory and ideas of George Washington Carver. A large mural was installed in 2014 to honor the 150th anniversary of Dr. Carver’s birth. The mural, of hand-made ceramic tiles, is named “DREAM BIG DREAMS”. This public art project was a collaboration of local students, area educators/professionals, volunteers, and donors. The mural honors Carver’s love for education, art, nature and his dream to make a better world.

Winterset Dog Park

The Winterset Dog Park opened to the public late in 2019. This facility is a great place for dogs to run off-leash. Play equipment for the dogs continues to be updated. A permit is required to use the dog park.

Winterset Skate Park/Rotary Plaza

The Winterset Skate Park is a street-plaza style design with various transitions and features for all skill levels. This facility provides our community a safe place for area skaters to enjoy this action sport and develop skills.

Giffin Fields

These 3 ball diamonds and batting cages are the home for the Winterset Little League Program. The Winterset Little League (WLL) organization handles all the programming for a large number of youth who enjoy baseball and softball each year. The city provides the general maintenance of the complex and field preparations.

Martin Marietta Softball Complex

Located at 1100 E. Court Ave. Includes two adult sized softball fields. Winterset Adult Softball Leagues and tournaments are played here. Youth teams practice here and may play some games. The east diamond is lighted. Both fields are irrigated to enhance the quality of the turf.

Martin Marietta Soccer Complex

Located to the east of softball fields. The soccer complex is the home of the Winterset Area Soccer Club (WASC) Program. Amenities include: 9 acres of multiple fields, irrigation, drainage and a large parking lot. Recent improvements include a new shelter house and expanded area (adjacent to dog park) for the younger ages. The WASC coordinates a very popular spring and fall youth soccer program including a summer camp and tournament.

Tennis/Pickleball Courts

Two courts are available on drop-in basis most anytime except during scheduled activities such as lessons and leagues. Permanent pickleball lines are painted on the east court and two portable nets are provided. Please, no bikes, skateboards, roller-blades, or scooters allowed on the courts. LIGHTS are regulated by a multi-watt system, which provides two light levels. The control box is located just outside the north gate. To turn lights ON, push the black button. After a short warm-up period, lights will be on the high intensity level for about 45minutes. After 45 minutes, lights will dim to the low energy saving level. With another push of the black button, the lights will quickly return to the high intensity level for another 45 minutes. Tennis and pickleball programs are listed in our City Guide.

People & Dogs in Our Parks & Public Spaces

The Parks and Recreation Department is committed to providing a safe and quality park system for the Winterset Community. Park rules exist to assure our many park visitors have a pleasant experience. Two specific park rules that need to be remembered when taking a dog to a City Park or any public places in our community are: Dogs are to be leashed at all times; and Pet owners shall pick up and properly dispose of their pet’s waste. Appreciation and thanks are extended to responsible pet owners who, along with their pets, respect other park users and the park system. Dog owners are asked to bring a paper cup or bag to pick up waste. Thank You!

Tobacco-Free Park Policy

To promote a healthier park experience, Tobacco use is prohibited by park visitors and park employees on all park grounds and facilities managed by the WPRD with the exception of City Park Campground.  This includes:  City Park, Winterset Aquatic Center / Tennis Courts Area, Martin Marietta Softball and Soccer Complexes, Giffin Fields, Memory Lane, Carver Park, Winterset Skate Park and Dog Park. This policy extends to any youth or adult activity and includes park shelter houses.  For this policy, tobacco use is defined as smoking, chewing, dipping, dissolvable, vaping, and lighting or any other use of tobacco-like products. As a reminder signs are posted at park locations. Thank you for your cooperation.
